The purpose of this article is to make a case for hiring live bands for wedding, and to give your arm a gentle twist into making this decision for yourself. Granted, live music isn’t for everyone – but, in a way, it is. Read on to discover how a live wedding band is the missing piece of your perfect wedding puzzle.
Live music is a personal experience
We’re not saying a wedding DJ won’t put the same amount of effort into making your wedding unique, just as we’re not saying you can’t have a perfectly personal experience listening to your favourite records alone with headphones on. What we are saying is that live musicians can achieve things that recorded music simply can’t: they can interact with you, and you them. Not only can you confer with your wedding band before the event (and ask them to dedicate a song to the bride or change the lyrics to include the groom’s name, for example) – you can also interact with each other during the show itself. Most experienced wedding bands will have come to expect random requests being shouted out – and will also know how to fully engage an audience, whether it’s by calling out the people sitting down and not dancing, or inviting people up onstage to sing along.
You can’t stop the dancing
Sure, a persistent house beat is all a DJ needs to have the room heaving for an hour or two. Maybe they’ll even dance a little too – but it’s just not the same as watching a live band living and loving every second of the sound they’re creating together out of thin air. Seeing a bunch of people onstage having the time of their lives is quite an infectious sight – if they all start dancing, you guests will all start dancing too (especially after knocking back a couple of drinks!).
It’s a spectacle
From where you’ll be standing (or even sitting), there’ll be a lot more to look at with a band leaping around stage than with a DJ stuck behind his desk. Wedding bands often dress up to look the part as well, which only adds to the array of shiny cymbals and colourful guitars that you just don’t get with band alternatives. The stage will rival even the bar as a focal point for your guests – and will also provide a distraction for bored or restless kids if they play during the meal. Any musical guests of yours will also relish the opportunity to have a quick nose at the gear the band’s using, and appreciate the skill of the players too.
All aboard the showmanship
A live band has to actually perform when they go on, to bring the songs we all love to life, which creates a perceptible stir in whatever room they’re in. Little sparks of excitement will spread from guest to guest as the first couple of stick-clicks are heard until the whole crowd is connected in a buzzing circuit of anticipation. It’s clear to your guests that you’ve gone the extra mile to provide them with something truly special, something that professionals have trained hard to be able to produce for their entertainment, and they’ll definitely appreciate it. And let’s be honest: you don’t often hear people clapping a DJ after they’ve spun you a song (other than towards the end of their set) – but a thunderous drum solo or a lightning fast guitar solo is a different story!
You get a lot more for your money
Generally speaking, wedding bands are more expensive than wedding DJs (although this is not always the case), but there’s a few good reasons for this. For one, you’re hiring an elite team of musicians to entertain your guests, each member of which has to be able to afford to travel and to maintain their instruments, rather than just one person DJing. For another, they’ll be bringing a lot more stuff – an entire drum kit, a full PA system, amps, lights and more besides. But you’ll also be receiving more of a service with a wedding band – aside from playing for you for on average two hours, you’ll also in many cases be granted access to the PA (very useful for delivering announcements and speeches, especially if you don’t want the hassle and expense of hiring your own) and treated to between-set entertainment (which can often end up being one of the band doubling up as a DJ, funnily enough).
It’s oh so romantic
More romantic than a DJ, in any case. And romance is the name of the game at a wedding, if anywhere. The celebration of your love will feel so very much more like the real thing with a live wedding band playing music just for you. Think back to classic images of prom night – there’s always a band playing beautiful tunes as couples dance beneath the lights. Live bands just capture the moment in such a unique way. Never before have these songs been played quite like they’re being played for you today, and never will they be again. It’s really that special!
