Sussex Cutting Garden: Supplier Spotlight

I've worked with Sussex Cutting Garden for a few years now and I love that thei flowers are seasonal and homegrown, which makes their arrangements individual and have a 'fresh from the garden' look.

Sussex Cutting Garden grow a wide range of traditional cottage garden flowers such as fragrant Sweet Peas and Lavendar, English Roses, Dahlias and a selection of spring bulbs for early season colour. All their homegrown flowers are grown in a paddock on an arable farm close to picturesque Hellingly in East Sussex. An added bonus is the wonderful fragrance that many of our flowers and herbs have.

Tell us about Sussex Cutting Garden... We are Kate Dalton and Caroline Harding...  and we have a passion for growing beautiful flowers. Sussex Cutting Garden was set up in March 2011, in a sheltered paddock at Broad Farm near Hellingly village. At the beginning, we sold our flowers at Farmers markets and local shops, but we soon dipped our toes into Weddings, and we haven't looked back! We just love the whole process of nurturing a gorgeous range of stems right through to perfection, and then cutting and arranging them for a couples' special day.

We offer a full Wedding service - Bouquets, buttonholes, table centrepieces, Church flowers and venue decor...and we can also supply our cut flowers by the bucket for the DIY Bride.

What makes Sussex Cutting Garden unique?
Our Cutting Garden is constantly changing through the seasons, so every Wedding is totally individual, with it's own special mix of fresh cut blooms. Brides love to visit us and see their flowers growing away, in the lead up to their Wedding. They appreciate the sustainability and eco benefits of sourcing their flowers locally. Most of all they just love the individuality and character of homegrown blooms. Many of our stems have wonderful fragrance - often missing from imported flowers.

What do couples ask for? Couples generally come to us looking for locally grown wild and country garden flowers. They want a natural style to their floral arrangements, and often ask for lots of greenery. Blush pink remains a popular colour preference, with purples and blues also requested quite frequently. Bridal bouquet style is wild and loose, perhaps a little trailing, and of a generous size. Cornflowers, Love in the Mist, Sweet peas and Ammi continue to be popular flowers.

Which Wedding has been your favourite? We have enjoyed being a part of so many happy couples' days. A favourite of ours has to be Stephanie and Jack's - the first one of this season.  The ceremony was at the Church just across the field from us in Hellingly village. A floral garland of Spring flowers was hung around the door, and aisle posies tied on the pew ends. The reception at Firle Place continued the theme of cream, lemony yellows and plenty of foliage...  Bird cages on the tables, a keepsake box filled with flowers, for the Top table, and large barrel toppers either side of the entrance door.

We welcome you to join us at the cutting garden for a consultation (by appointment please).
